An Army post on the Kansas River since 1853

Concrete Contractors in Fort Riley, KS

Patios, driveways and slab work for service families living around the post on the Kansas River.

  • We measure on site before naming a price, and the quote arrives in writing, line by line
  • Every outdoor pour: compacted crushed rock underneath, air-entrained concrete, joints laid out ahead of time
  • Permit and right-of-way questions checked with the city or county before a date is booked

Concrete Work for Families Stationed at Fort Riley

Fort Riley is not a typical town, and concrete contractors who work around it need to understand that. The post covers 101,733 acres in Geary and Riley counties, along the Kansas River between Junction City and Manhattan. Only the part with housing development is counted as the Fort Riley census-designated place, which had 9,230 residents in the 2020 census. Families who live off post own or rent homes in the surrounding cities, and those homes are where our work is.

On post versus off post

Our work is on privately owned and rented homes, not on the installation itself; if you live on post, any change to a driveway, patio or walk is a question for your housing office. Where we fit is with families who buy a home in Junction City, Ogden, Grandview Plaza, Manhattan or the smaller towns nearby, and landlords who rent to service members.

Military moves add their own timing. Owners often want work finished before they sell or turn the house into a rental. Others have just arrived and want a patio, a wider driveway for a second vehicle or a shed pad before the first winter.

A little history, and why the land matters

The site was chosen in 1852 and approved by the War Department in January 1853. It was called Camp Center until June 27, 1853, when it was renamed Fort Riley after Major General Bennet C. Riley. A survey party under Capt. Robert H. Chilton picked the site near the junction of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers in the fall of 1852. Today the post is home to the 1st Infantry Division and includes areas such as Main Post, Camp Funston and Marshall Army Airfield.

That river setting means many of the surrounding homes sit on bottomland or on the slopes leading up from it. Ground near the river can hold water, and upland lots often have clay that moves with the seasons. Both call for a well-compacted granular base under any slab.

How we handle a job for a military family

1. Quick site visit. We look at the area, measure it and check how water drains. 2. Clear written estimate. The scope, thickness, reinforcement and finish are written down so a spouse or property manager can review it if you are deployed or away for training. 3. Scheduling around your move. If you are selling or leaving, we plan the pour so the concrete has time to cure before showings or the moving truck. 4. Simple care instructions. New concrete needs time before heavy vehicles and should not see deicing salt its first winter. We put that in writing too.

Services that fit homes near the post

  • Concrete driveways and parking pads for families with extra vehicles, trailers or boats
  • Concrete patios for backyard grilling and kids' play space
  • Stamped concrete to give a resale home a finished outdoor area
  • Sidewalks and steps, including repairs that fix trip hazards before an inspection
  • Garage and shed slabs for storage while gear piles up between moves
  • Concrete repair and replacement for cracked, settled or scaled sections

Before you sell or hand over the keys

A buyer's inspector or a new tenant notices the walk and the steps first. A lifted sidewalk square, a stoop that has pulled away from the door or a driveway panel that rocks are the usual items to fix before listing. If you plan to seal new concrete, leave room for it: sealer goes on only after the slab has cured for about a month, so a pour the week before a move will not be sealed by the time you leave. We can write the care steps down for the next owner or for your property manager.

Air-entrained mixes, correct joint spacing and good curing are standard on every exterior pour, since this part of Kansas sees long stretches of freezing weather. Call (785) 509-7585 to set up a visit at your off-post home.

Fort Riley Questions

Can you pour a patio at my on-post house at Fort Riley?

Start with your housing office for anything on post. We work on homes off post that you own or that a landlord manages.

I am leaving on PCS orders soon. Is there time for a new driveway?

Often, yes. A driveway can usually take foot traffic within a day or two and cars after about a week, depending on weather. Tell us your move date and we will plan backward from it.

Can my spouse or property manager handle the estimate if I am away?

Yes. We put the full scope in writing so anyone you choose can review and approve it while you are on duty.
